Fiberstone vs Concrete Planters: Weight, Frost and Cost Compared
Fiberstone and concrete planters can look almost the same in a photo. In a container, on a rooftop or after a hard winter they behave very differently. This guide compares the two materials for buyers who import planters or specify them for hotels, offices and landscape projects.
What fiberstone and concrete are made of
Concrete planters are cast from cement, sand, aggregate and water, sometimes with steel mesh or glass-fibre (GRC). Walls are usually thick so the piece stays strong, which makes the planter heavy.
Fiberstone planters are a composite: unsaturated polyester resin mixed with stone powder, laid up by hand in a mould and reinforced with fiberglass mat. At CTM a typical mix is about 41.5% resin and 55% stone by weight. Walls start at 3 mm and get thicker with size; large pieces get steel bars and square pieces get extra fiberglass at the rim. The surface is finished with a two-component (2K) paint that protects it from UV and scratches.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Fiberstone | Concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Light – up to 70% lighter than natural stone; one or two people can move most sizes | Heavy – large pieces usually need a pallet truck or crane |
| Frost | Fiberglass-reinforced body flexes slightly; CTM pieces rated −20 °C to +60 °C with a 10-year frost warranty | Can crack when water in the pores freezes, unless sealed and well drained |
| Impact | Resists chipping and cracking from normal knocks | Hard surface, but corners chip and cracks are hard to repair |
| Finishes | Stone, concrete, sandstone, lava, patina, smooth, gloss and any RAL / Pantone colour | Mostly natural grey or pigmented concrete; colour range is limited |
| Sizes | Tabletop to XXL (1.2 m+ pots, 2 m troughs) in one piece | Large sizes possible but very heavy |
| Shipping | Sizes nest inside each other, so more pieces fit in a container and freight per piece is lower | Cannot nest; weight limits the load before the container is full |
| Roofs & balconies | Suitable where floor loading is limited | Load must be checked by an engineer |
Weight and freight cost
Weight is the biggest practical difference. A heavy planter costs more at every step: inland trucking, handling at the port, delivery to site and installation. Concrete also reaches the container's weight limit long before the container is full, so you pay for empty space.
Fiberstone planters are light and are designed to nest, so a set of three or five sizes ships in the space of the largest one. For importers this means more pieces per container and a lower landed cost per piece. We quote every order with carton size, CBM and pieces per container so you can compare like for like.
Frost and weather resistance
Concrete is porous. Water soaks in, freezes, expands and over several winters opens hairline cracks. Sealing helps but needs to be renewed.
Fiberstone has a sealed inner wall and a 2K topcoat, and the fiberglass reinforcement gives the body a little flex. That is why we can offer a 10-year frost warranty on our planters. Drainage holes are pre-drilled, or left closed for indoor use on request.
Look and finish
Because the surface coat contains real stone powder, fiberstone can reproduce the texture of concrete, sandstone, granite and lava stone, and it also takes smooth, matt and high-gloss colours that concrete cannot. Our finishes library has 34 standard finishes, and we match custom colours to RAL or Pantone on an approved colour chip.
When to choose concrete
- You need a very heavy planter that cannot be moved or tipped over, for example as a traffic barrier.
- The project specifies raw, unpainted cast concrete.
- The planter will be filled on site and never moved, and freight distance is short.
When to choose fiberstone
- Rooftops, terraces and balconies with weight limits.
- Hotels, offices and retail spaces that rearrange planters.
- Import programmes where freight cost per piece matters.
- Cold climates where frost damage is a risk.
- Collections that need many colours, sizes or a custom design.
Tip for importers: ask your supplier for the wall thickness, the reinforcement used in large and square pieces, the frost rating and the warranty in writing. These four points tell you more about quality than a photo.

Frequently asked questions
Is fiberstone lighter than concrete?
Yes. Fiberstone is a thin-walled composite of resin, stone powder and fiberglass, so a fiberstone planter weighs only a fraction of a solid concrete planter of the same size. This makes it easier to place on rooftops and balconies and cheaper to ship.
Can fiberstone planters stay outside in winter?
Good fiberstone planters are made for outdoor use all year. Our planters are rated from −20 °C to +60 °C and carry a 10-year frost warranty.
Does fiberstone look like real concrete or stone?
The surface is made with real stone powder and finished with a 2K topcoat, so it can match the look of concrete, sandstone, granite or lava stone, as well as smooth and glossy colours.
