Frost-Proof Planters for Hotels and Commercial Projects: A Specifier’s Guide
Hotels, offices, restaurants and public spaces need planters that look the same after five winters as on opening day. This guide explains what to check when you specify outdoor planters for commercial projects in cold climates.
Why planters crack in winter
Water gets into the material or collects in the bottom of the pot, freezes and expands. Over repeated freeze–thaw cycles this opens cracks, pushes off rims and splits corners. Terracotta and unsealed concrete are the most exposed because they absorb water.
Choose the right material
- Fiberstone – resin, stone powder and fiberglass. Low water absorption, a little flex, light weight and a stone look. Good all-round choice for commercial projects.
- Fiberglass – very light and smooth, ideal for gloss colours and large sizes.
- Concrete / GRC – heavy and durable, but needs sealing and careful drainage in frost.
- Glazed ceramic – beautiful but can crack in hard frost unless rated frost-proof.

Specification checklist
| Item | What to ask for |
|---|---|
| Temperature rating | A stated range, e.g. −20 °C to +60 °C |
| Frost warranty | In writing, with the number of years |
| Wall thickness | Minimum thickness, increasing with size (CTM: from 3 mm) |
| Reinforcement | Fiberglass in every piece; steel in large pieces; extra layers at rims and corners of square pieces |
| Inner wall | Sealed, so water does not soak into the body |
| Topcoat | UV- and scratch-resistant (2K) paint |
| Drainage | Pre-drilled holes, or closed for indoor use |
| Colour | Approved sample or colour chip; RAL / Pantone if needed |
| Inspection | Right to a third-party inspection before shipment |
Drainage and planting
Even the best planter suffers if water stands in it. Keep drainage holes open, add a drainage layer of gravel or clay pebbles, and use pot feet so water can run off. For very large planters, a lightweight filler in the lower third saves soil and reduces weight on roofs and terraces.
Size, scale and weight
Commercial spaces need larger pieces than homes: tall columns at entrances, long troughs as room dividers and XXL pots for trees. Fiberstone makes these sizes practical – XXL pots and troughs up to 2 m are made in one piece and are still light enough to place without a crane. Check floor loading for roofs and balconies with the planted, watered weight.
Finishes that last
For high-traffic areas choose textured stone finishes, which hide scuffs, or a sealed 2K gloss for a premium look. Hotel groups often specify their own brand colours; fiberstone can be matched to any RAL or Pantone code. Browse our 34 standard finishes.
Lead time and quantities for projects
Plan at least two to three months from order to installation for an overseas project: sample approval, about 30–45 days of production, and ocean freight. Order a few spare pieces of each size for future replacement – matching colour later is harder than buying spares now.
Need planters for a project? Send us the drawing or schedule with sizes, quantities and colours. We make standard and custom planters, including XXL sizes and brand colours, and ship FOB Vietnam.
Planters for projects from CTM
Our planters carry a 2-year product warranty and a 10-year frost warranty – see the warranty terms. Browse square and tall planters, troughs and round planters, or read how to buy.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a planter frost-proof?
A frost-proof planter does not crack when water freezes in or around it. That depends on the material (low water absorption), reinforcement, a sealed inner wall and good drainage. Fiberstone planters reinforced with fiberglass perform well; ask for the temperature rating and a written frost warranty.
Should outdoor planters have drainage holes?
Yes. Standing water is the main cause of frost damage and root rot. Use pre-drilled drainage holes and a drainage layer. For indoor use, planters can be supplied without holes or with a liner.
Can planters be made in our hotel brand colours?
Yes. Fiberstone planters can be finished in any RAL or Pantone colour, approved on a colour chip before production.
